James Ross Gray-Buchanan
James Ross Gray-Buchanan (1840-1925)
The family of Gray-Buchanan is descended from Thomas Buchanan third of Ardoch, who married three times. First in 1759 Margaret Buchanan, heiress of Bailochruin, second in 1764 Jean Gray, daughter of John Gray of Dalmarnock, From both of these marriages there was issue.
By his first wife, John Buchanan, and by his second wife James Buchanan, born 17 June 1766, and a daughter Elizabeth, born 1772, married Alexander Gordon and died in 1845 leaving issue.
In 1841, James assumed the name of Gray on succeeding to the estate of his cousin John Gray of Scotstown and Eastfield, and in 1847 he acquired the lands of Ardoch from his half brother John Buchanan. He died in 1855 leaving a son Thomas.
Thomas Gray-Buchanan was born in 1804 married 1835 Mary Rowland, and had issue, in 1840, James Ross Gray-Buchanan the bearer of these arms.
James Ross-Gray Buchanan J.P. for Co. Lanark, served for many years in the 26th Regiment of Cameronians and was Lieutenant-Colonel and Hon. Colonel commanding 3rd and 4th Bat. Cameronians Scottish Rifles.
He married in 1873 Kate Farie and has issue.
