Named for Thomas Buchanan, cousin of U.S. president James Buchanan, and second governor of Liberia. The town was popular with refugees during the Liberian Civil War as it largely escaped the fighting. Fishing is an important industry in the town. The town also has isolated beaches and lagoons.

Buchanan is a village in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan within the Rural Municipality of Buchanan No. 304. In the 2016 Census the Village of Buchanan recorded a population of 218.

Buchanan incorporated as a village on June 11, 1907. The town was named after R. Buchanan, a pioneer rancher.

J.W. Gardner erected premises in Beech Forest which formed the core of a village. Construction on a narrow gauge railway commenced in 1900 connecting Beech Forest and Geelong. From this time business interests began investment in Beech Forest and established various retail and service establishments. In 1902 three early settlers, J.W.Gardner, Charles Buchanan and John Cockerill, divided part of their land or bought land which was sold to businesses.

Buchanan is a locality in the Northern Territory of Australia located in the territory's west adjoining the border with the state of Western Australia.

It has an area of 24,252 square kilometres (9,364 sq mi) and The 2016 Australian census reports a population of 55 people.

Its name is derived from the Nathaniel Buchanan, a pioneering drover who first brought cattle overland from Queensland to the Northern Territory in 1877.
