Lucy was awarded the Buchanan of Leny representation as it has been particularly linked to the female line. Indeed our former Genealogist told me on several occasions that he thought the very early Buchanan of that Ilk line may have completely passed through the female Leny line. As he did not need to go that far back he unfortunately did not pursue this. However Buchanan of Auchmar’s book on the Buchanan family name, also suggests there were two occasions on which two different heiress of the Leny of that ilk, married a Buchanan of that Ilk’s son.
The new Buchanan of Leny arms also reflects the ancient Leny sword and also has the extra lion related motto. Interestingly, Lucy has the same style of coat of arms and flag as was awarded to Bruce and Rory. This is important as it shows the Lyon court did not make any distinction in the coat of arms based on her being a woman. Actually Lucy is the first woman to receive this new style of arms. As whilst previously women were given their own coats of arms, they were all created in a different styling to those given to men. So this lack of discrimination is a new honour and we are glad it is coming to the Buchanan Clan.
